Biography

Andromachi Bouna-Vaila is deeply committed to the preservation and promotion of the Greek music and dance tradition, with a particular emphasis on Epirus. She is a member and dance supervisor of the Lykeion Ellinidon of Ioannina, as well as a member of the dance team at the Lykeion Ellinidon of Ioannina for 30 years. With many years of experience in the field, she has served as a judge at dance festivals and has actively contributed to the scientific committee for the review of scientific articles and journals related to dance. At the same time, she organizes dance seminars that focus on the traditional dances of Epirus and specifically the villages of Konitsa, contributing to the preservation and teaching of this unique cultural heritage. As a dance teacher for about 10 years, she has taught dance groups in Epirus and Epirote clubs in Attica, consistently and passionately transmitting her knowledge and love for Greek dance to the younger generations. She is currently a lecturer at the University of Western Macedonia and Scientific Director at the Unaccompanied Minors Reception Center of Pentalofos – Municipality of Voios.

She studied Social Anthropology and History at the University of the Aegean and holds two master’s degrees and a PhD in the field of “Sociology of Education and Gender” from the University of Ioannina.

The research and teaching work of Bouna-Vaila is extensive and includes the teaching of sixteen (17) courses in Sociology, Pedagogy and Psychology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Democritus University, the University of West Attica, the University of Thessaly, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of West Macedonia and the University of the Aegean, covering a total period of five (5) academic years. In addition, she has taught in a large number of postgraduate, vocational training and lifelong learning programs. She has also participated in six (6) research projects, three of which as a postdoctoral researcher. The above research projects focus on issues of gender identities, gender-based violence, mental health, discrimination and school inclusion and were carried out using qualitative research methods.

Bouna-Vaila’s numerous scientific publications refer to issues of gender identities, gender-based violence, homophobia, gender discrimination, school bullying and discrimination. Finally, Ms. Bouna-Vaila participated in a significant number of scientific and organizational committees of scientific conferences. Her work and social activity so far focuses on human rights, gender equality, gender-based violence and otherness (Citizen Expert in the Gender Equality Committee of the Municipality of Ioannina, Member of the Steering Committee of the European Women’s Voluntary Organization of Young Women of Europe, Member of the Jury of the Diversity & Inclusion Awards, President of the Association of Sociologists, Ioannina Branch, Member of the Board of Directors of the Greek Girls’ High School of Ioannina).

The tradition of Epirus is being revived through a new series of traditional dance seminars, which aims to highlight the different musical and dance expressions of each region. With a structure based on the geographical and cultural diversity of Epirus, each seminar will focus on a specific region, exploring its dance tradition through steps, rhythms, music and philosophy. Teachers with deep knowledge of the tradition will guide participants on a journey from one end of Epirus to the other, highlighting the local peculiarities and the richness of different approaches to dance. The series of seminars is aimed at dancers, researchers and lovers of the Epirus tradition, offering a unique opportunity to understand the musical and dance diversity of the region and to experience its richness through teaching and practice.

She was a dance teacher at the first “Mousika Ktismata” in 2025.
