Biography
Born in 1978, he came into contact with music and percussion at a young age with his first teacher being his father, Michalis Klapakis, who studied with Mathios Balambanis.
He is a graduate of the Model Experimental Music High School-Lyceum of Pallini. He studied violin with Yiannis Zevgolis, music theory at the National Conservatory of Athens and symphonic percussion with Konstantinos Vorisis and Kostas Theodorakos. He was taught the daouli by Giorgos Gevgelis.
He plays and participates in performances of traditional and contemporary music, dance and theater in Greece and abroad. He is a founding member of the musical group Polis Ensemble with compositional activity (2011 to present).
Some of his most creative collaborations are with the following notable Greek artists, composers, choreographers, directors and groups: Katerina Pappadopoulou + Anastatica project (MMTH, Stavros Niarchos Foundation), Domna Samiou’s KSDM (MMA, Herodion, discography), Creó Dance Company – a peak project, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture (Kalamata Dance Festival, MMA, Michael Cacoyannis Foundation), “My heart as an antidote” (Androniki Marathaki – a project also subsidized by the Ministry of Culture), Lyceum of Greek Women (Herodion, MMA, MMTH), Aegean Forces, Athens and Epidaurus Festival “Here is a threshing floor for dance” (Ancient theater Epidaurus), Homer’s Iliad (Stathis Livathinos, Athens Festival), Nikos Mamagakis (Ancient Theater of Knossos), Christos Tsiamoulis, Socrates Sinopoulos, Nikos Xydakis, Nikos Platyrachos, “Visions and Wonders of General Makrygiannis” (Dimitris Marangopoulos, Stavros Niarchos Foundation), Lydia Koniordou, etc.
In 2021, he curated the musical exhibition “A Melodic Journey to the Music of 1821” for the Museum of Greek Folk Musical Instruments. In the winter of 2023, in collaboration with choreographer Jenny Argyriou and visual artist Vassilis Gerodimos, he undertook the musical direction for the “Eleusinian Movement” at the opening ceremony of “Eleusis European Capital of Culture 2023”.
He teaches percussion and rhythm in the form of seminars, in music schools, as well as in theater and dance groups and workshops, with which he collaborates in appearances-performances in and outside Greece.
