Stergios Ziogas

Traditional Dances from Zagori – Stergios Ziogas

Description

The Cultural Landscape of Zagori, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023, nurtured people who were resilient, austere, and Doric in character. This is reflected in its “heavy” music, but most prominently in the steady, proud, and ritualistic steps of its dancers.

In this workshop, we will explore the dances and music of Zagori, the dynamic role of women in this cultural setting, the position of men, the uniqueness of each lead dancer, the distinct musical ensembles (kompanies), the relationship between rhythm and movement, and the incredibly beautiful Zagori traditional costume.

The seminar is intended for both dancers and dance instructors who wish to immerse themselves in the region’s unique soundscape and master the “perdikopatimata”—the distinctive dance steps of the Zagori tradition.
