Nikos Nousias
Traditional Dances from Tzoumerka and Ioannina – Nikos Nousias
Description
Tzoumerka is a vast mountainous region with both mountain and semi-mountain communities, forming a mosaic of musical and dance patterns. Despite its internal differences (Aromanian-speaking and non-Aromanian communities), the Tzoumerka region constitutes a human-geographical unity, which today is strongly reflected in the social memory and collective consciousness of Tzoumerkiotes everywhere.
It is certain that Tzoumerka has a long-standing tradition of vocal music, though it is now difficult to fully trace its history. Most communities keep group singing alive, especially through the kagkelaria dances, even though these now often take the form of staged representations.
In contrast to purely vocal traditions, festivals with musical instruments continue to thrive and evolve, as they remain central events during the summer gatherings of the community members.
The workshop will cover representative dances from various communities, reflecting their interactions across time and space.
