Vasilis Papageorgiou

Clarinet – Vasilis Papageorgiou

Description

The imaginatively creative 20th century established a new balance with the clarinet as the absolute leader, leaving us a golden legacy of techniques, timbres, repertoire, and professional practices.

A dense network of interaction unfolded, with brilliant nodes formed by master clarinetists who, while building upon one another’s work, inevitably stood out for their personal style.

This material—musical identities, accents, and personas—will be the focus of the Musical Structures workshop, using great pieces from the Epirotic musical tradition, including selections from Pogoni, Konitsa, Zagori, the urban center, Metsovo, Tzoumerka, and Thesprotia.

Indicative pieces include: Moiroloi, Parakalamiótiko, Dryminítsa, Berati, Kleftes, Arvanitiko, Gaita, Anaselítsa, Richtó, Grava, Frasia, Potamiá, Palió Zagorísio, Apano stin Triantafyliá, Genovéfa, Klamata, Alámbeis, Marika, Metsovítiko Sygkathistó, Paliá Itiá, Papadiá, and others.

Biography

I was born in 1978 and raised in Vounoplagia, Ioannina.

From a young age, I showed a deep love and passion for folk music and the clarinet. My teachers, in order, were Thomas Chaliggiannis and Stavros Kapsalis, while I also owe much to Nikos Filippidis, Alexandros Arkadopoulos, Grigoris Kapsalis, and Christos Zotos.

I studied at the Department of Music Studies in Athens, earning a master’s degree in clarinet performance.

Since 2008, I have been teaching music—specifically clarinet—at the Music School of Ioannina. At the same time, I have performed at numerous festivals, village feasts (glentia), musical events, and concerts, with a special love for the local Epirotic musical tradition.

I have participated in several recordings and have appeared on radio and television alongside both veteran and contemporary musicians.

I have collaborated with renowned singers such as Alekos Kitsakis, Antonis Kyritsis, Nikos Daskalos, Lakis Chalkias, Pagona Athanasiou, Savvas Siatras, and Yiannis Papakostas.
